| We work with the messy reality of organisations. Individuals use different perspectives and mental models to make sense of what is going on and these interact to generate the continuous creative energy that is change. Perhaps our objective is to work with this energy so that it brings the organisation to “a good place” rather than an entirely pre-determined destination?
To understand and appreciate change requires us to look at the organisation in a participative and inquiring way – to explore the connections and conversations that give it life and energy; the lenses through which the people within the organisation perceive and co-create their world; the mental models that prevail. Sustainable change comes from the evolution of these mental models – or the revolutionary shifts that can sometimes occur.
For example a recent assignment with a manufacturing organisation has equipped them to largely self-manage an inclusive process of creating the blueprint for what they want to achieve and how they want to achieve it. Several employees, from the areas of management, administration and production, facilitated workshops which adopted appreciative inquiry principles to build a sense of what it will look like if the company is “being the best it can be”. The process has given them energy and focus at a time when trading conditions are difficult.
